Every time I get ready for a photo session, I find myself reflecting on the many times I've been asked, 'What should I wear?' It's a question that comes up often, and I totally get it—because I feel this way literally every time I leave the house. It is actually a pretty big component of your session, as your clothing will impact the overall visual style of your photos and even can effect your body language depending on how comfortable or uncomfortable you are in your outfit. To avoid last-minute stress and ensure you're comfortable and confident, it's a good idea to start thinking about your outfits at least two weeks in advance. Trust me, being rushed or unsure about your attire can lead to a less enjoyable experience—and I've definitely been there myself!
Your outfit doesn’t need to be brand new or anything fancy. What's most important is that it feels like you. If you're not a fan of heels, there's no need to force yourself into them. Instead, opt for practical footwear like wedges, especially for outdoor sessions. Give yourself the freedom to pick something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Trust me, your confidence will shine through in your photos. Whether that means a casual t-shirt and jeans or a more polished button-down shirt or dress, there’s no right or wrong choice—what matters most is that you stay true to your personal style.
FALL STYLE GUIDE:
To help you get started, I've put together a fall style guide with outfit inspiration based on four of my favorite looks from previous fall sessions. These will give you a range of styles, color schemes and locations, but it is certainly not all inclusive. Feel free to get creative and choose clothings that best reflects your family's taste and preferences. When looking for clothing, I start by searching at Target, Gap, Loft, Old Navy, Baltic Born, H&M, and Carter's, but there are so many great brands out there and I ALWAYS visit our local children clothing sales.
1. Embrace Corduroy
It is such an iconic fall fabric , not to mention adds amazing texture to your photographs. Matching fabrics instantly creates harmony and coordination in your outfit. The best part? This gives you the freedom to easily play around with color. And it adds a touch of nostalgia too! Break it up with neutrals and add a pop of pattern to make it extra playful!
Outfit Inspiration:
2. Warm Earth Tones
Earth tones look good on everyone and always perfectly compliment outdoor settings. Their more muted colors are more flattering to skin tones. I suggest playing around with warmer colors in the fall to accentuate the natural colors of the season! For extra fun, play with textures and different materials. Even add some plaid!
Outfit Inspiration:
3. Greens & Khakis
This combination of creams, olive & military greens, khaki, and brown looks good in any outdoor setting. Add stripes for a classic look that will keep your images looking timeless. For an extra touch of style, mix in subtle textures like knit sweaters or corduroy jackets. This is a great way to keep it casual, but still show personality while adding depth and interest to your photos!

4. Wildflower Inspired
I love floral prints in all seasons and fall is no exception! This time of year there are so many beautiful wildflowers blooming - from yellow goldenrod to purple and white asters to blue chickory. Embracing a mix of prints and solids with these colors will perfectly accent the stunning autumn background. You can choose matching florals, like below, or ones that compliment each other. Just make sure to keep the other colors simple so that it doesn't look too busy.

Whether you draw inspiration from these ideas or dream up your own perfect look, remember to have fun with it! I can't wait to see how you bring your unique style to life in our fall photo session.
