The vibrant autumn foliage across southeastern Pennsylvania creates the perfect backdrop for your outdoor family or maternity photo session. From national parks and conserved lands to unique farms and historic sites, the Greater Philadelphia area is full of picturesque locations ideal for capturing your family’s seasonal memories.

Whether you’re planning a fall family photo session, a maternity portrait in autumn, or just want stunning outdoor portraits, this guide highlights my favorite locations for fall family and maternity photography in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas.

Best Spots for Fall Family Photography in Philadelphia & Surrounding Areas

Fields + Open Spaces for Fall Portraits

Grande Parade at Valley Forge National Historical Park - King of Prussia, PA

I will never stop talking about how much I love this location. Throughout the autumn season it is continually changing and gorgeous well into late November. From wildflowers in September, to silvery white fields in November, it never disappoints me.

Cedar Hollow Preserve - Malvern, PA

A quiet alternative to Valley Forge, this small preserve is tucked away and peaceful. With sycamore trees and meadows, it’s perfect for families who want privacy and space to explore.

Brightside Farm Park - Malvern, PA

This is park is always pretty quiet and calm. There are paved and mowed walking paths throughout the fields of this old farm. While the farm buildings and surrounding areas are not open to the public, they are visible in the distance, making a lovely backdrop.

Valley Forge – Knox’s Quarters (King of Prussia, PA)Historic stone houses, rustic farm buildings, and tree-lined paths create timeless charm. This spot is especially beautiful in early fall when the magnolia and other trees are still showing off their color.

Valley Forge – Washington’s Headquarters (Valley Forge, PA)Golden grasses, wooded trails, and seasonal blooms make this location versatile and classic. It’s one of my favorites for families who love a little variety.

Historic Site + Architecture

Knox's Farm at Valley Forge National Historical Park - King of Prussia, PA

Valley Forge National Historical Park offers endless beautiful backdrops, from wide-open fields to historic buildings dating back to the Revolutionary War. This particular farm is a fall favorite, and it’s easy to see why—stone houses, rustic barns, and tree-lined paths come together to create a setting full of timeless charm.

Washington's Headquarters at Valley Forge National Historical Park - King of Prussia, PA

Another favorite within Valley Forge, this spot offers so much variety—golden grasses, wooded trails, and even a historic train station. You’ll also find Revolutionary-era cabins and buildings that add a touch of history to your photos. With so many different backdrops in one location, it’s a classic choice for families who love both natural beauty and timeless charm.

The Mill at Anselma - Chester Springs, PA

This historic mill and property is such a hidden treasure! It's usually pretty quiet compared to some of the other locations and encapsulates the quintessential "fall" feeling. In addition to the mill & accompanying buildings, there are trails and a small pond to explore.

Creeks + Lakeshores

Marsh Creek State Park - Downingtown, PA

If you’re looking for serene lake views and grassy hillsides, Marsh Creek is the perfect spot. The park offers plenty of variety and kids love exploring here, which means lots of opportunities for natural, candid shots.

French Creek Trail - Phoenixville, PA

This spot works double duty—it’s perfect for families who want a bit of historic charm and playful creek access. Kids love exploring here!

Urban + Industrial

Downtown Phoenixville, PA

From brick walls and murals to the iconic Colonial Theatre and Phoenixville Foundry, downtown Phoenixville offers endless character. Great for families who want something fun and different with a little bit of edge.

Farms + Seasonal Favorites

Maple Acres Farm & Market - Plymouth Meeting, PA

The vibrant zinnia fields at this local farm bloom into early November. If you'd like something a little different for your fall photos, then this is the place for you!

Yeager's Farm & Market - Phoenixville, PA

Nothing says holiday card quite like rows of Christmas trees. Available for sessions in early November, this location is cozy, festive, and dog-friendly!

Tips for Booking Fall Sessions

  • Booking for Peak Foliage: While fall colors can be unpredictable and change quickly, peak foliage in southeastern PA typically arrives around mid-October. These dates always book quickly, so I recommend scheduling your session 6–8 weeks in advance. Keeping an eye on local foliage reports can also help you time it just right

  • Styling to Complement Fall Colors: Neutral and earthy tones—creams, rusts, soft blues, and maroons—look beautiful in autumn light. Layers and textures like knits add visual interest. Check my fall style guide for ideas.

  • Choosing a Location  Consider the mood you want, how far you’d like to travel, and how comfortable your family will feel in the space. Not sure where to start? I’d be happy to recommend locations that reflect your family best.

Final Thoughts

No matter your style, there’s a fall location that will feel just right for your family. I’ll help you choose a spot that matches the feeling you want to capture, so the experience feels easy and enjoyable.

And remember, perfection isn’t the goal. What matters most is that you’re comfortable, relaxed, and able to be yourselves. The setting simply frames the story you’re already living together.
